Course Overview

The GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART) course at Errigal Training Centre equips wind industry personnel with the advanced skills, practical knowledge, and confidence required to carry out safe, efficient, and compliant rescue operations throughout all key areas of a wind turbine.

Covering both team-based and single-rescuer techniques, the course prepares participants to perform rescues in the hub, spinner, blade interior, nacelle, tower, and basement, reflecting the real-world challenges encountered in both onshore and offshore wind environments. Through practical exercises and realistic rescue scenarios, technicians learn how to assess emergencies, identify and utilise appropriate anchor points, inspect and manage certified rescue equipment, and execute controlled casualty evacuations from confined spaces and vertical structures.

Participants must bring their own work safety boots.

Course Content

This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively perform rescue operations within wind turbine environments. The programme covers:

  • Conducting rescue operations in wind turbine nacelles, towers, and basement areas using industry-standard rescue equipment, methods, and techniques.
  • Identifying and utilising safe and suitable anchor points, including certified and structural anchors, while applying correct lifting angles, deviations, and edge protection measures.
  • Performing rescue duties both as a rescuer and as a rescue coordinator, with a focus on effective communication, teamwork, and decision-making.
  • Recognising potential hazards during rescue operations and implementing appropriate control measures to minimise risk.
  • Planning and executing rescue scenarios in accordance with industry best practices and safety procedures.
  • Ensuring the safe use, inspection, and handling of rescue equipment throughout rescue operations.

Prerequisites

You must hold the following GWO certificates (valid & in date) to enrol in this course

• Working at Height
• First Aid
• Manual Handling
