Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11)
- If you are going to work at sea, the Department of Transport requires you to hold a valid Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11) Certificate
- The Merchant Shipping (Medical Examinations) Regulations 2014 SI No. 246 of 2014 makes it a legal requirement for any seafarer to hold a valid Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11) certificate confirming their medical fitness for the work for which they are employed.
- These Regulations apply to seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board an Irish seagoing ship which is involved in commercial maritime operations.
- As per UK MCA Merchant Shipping Notice 1815 (M); a valid Seafarer Medical issued in Ireland is recognised as equivalent to the UK ENG1 Medical for seafarers on sea-going United Kingdom ships (as defined in the Regulations)

Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11) Content
The medical will cover:
- Measuring your height and weight
- A standard eye test and a colour blindness test
- A hearing test
- Ear and throat evaluations and teeth/gums inspection
- Questions on your medical history, drinking habits, etc.
- A urine sample (to test kidney functionality and blood sugar)
- Reflex testing
- Listening to your heart and lungs, testing blood pressure and heart rate
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for a Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11) Medical
Certification
Our in-house doctor will issue a DfT approved Seafarers’ Medical (ENG11) medical certificate of fitness upon successful completion of your medical.
Medicals will have to be undertaken every 2 years.
Items To Bring
- If you are currently on any medication, please bring these with you for the attention of the doctor.
- You will need to bring your passport when attending for this medical and Seafarer’s Discharge Book, if you have one.
- When it is not a first medical, the previous medical certificate should also be brought to the examination.
